The mass transferfeatures of integral lump-shaped carrier





The features of integral lump-shaped carrier include below for parts:
1)   mass transfer
2)    intra-particle diffusion
3) Bed pressure drop
4Heat transfer



As the limitation of mass transfer, the conversion rate of graininess type catalyst is not only depending on its granule size but the height of the reactor; usually the diameter of reactor must be longer than granule 10 times. Thus the horizontal reactor is not suit for graininess type catalyst. Besides, Because of the pressure fluctuation and the volume shrinkage of catalyst during its working, or catalyst particles flowing caused by some mechanical factor, it is easily channeling. Thus the static bed of graininess type catalyst must be vertical installation, enable the air flowing from top to the bottom or from bottom to the top of the catalyst to avoid short circuit because of particles flowing. 

The shape of integral lump-shaped catalyst has no relationship with mass transfer, that is to say when the flow rate is the same, the performance of the shinny and long integral lump-shaped catalyst is the same with stubby shape. This property enables the integral lump-shaped catalyst used in horizontal reactor, and special suit for catalyst installation for waste gas treatment of car. Reaction matters (The Gaseous State or fluid state) will not be mixed again when enter the channels of integral lump-shaped catalyst, thus the reaction matter should be mixed fully before enter catalyst bed to assure they will spread inside reactor uniformly.

what is Integral lump-shaped carrier?


Integral lump-shaped carrier is a kind of carrier which has the structure of continuous and lots of parallel channels.  The shape of these channels is hexagon and like honeycomb, thus it is called honeycomb carrier usually. Besides hexagon shape, it also has shapes like square, triangle, annulus etc.
Firstly, the ceramic honeycomb is used in building and heat transfer. Since 1966, it have been used in tail gas treatment (NOx) of Nitric Acid plant, and in the mid-1970, American and Japan applied them to tail gas treatment of car to treat the CO, NOx AND imperfect combustion hydro carbons. At present, almost all of catalytic converter of waste gas of car adopt integral lump-shaped ceramic honeycomb carrier, others adopt metal matrix integral lump-shaped carrier. Honeycomb type integral lump-shaped carrier also is used in catalytic combustion of organic waste gas. The mass transfer, heat transfer and pressure drop of integral lump-shaped carrier is not the same with discredited bed property of graininess type catalyst.
